To the Editor:

I was outraged to hear about yesterday’s raid at the Del Monte fruit processing plant. ICE raids have been employed as a pressure tactic to get Congress to approve guest worker programs and to shore up Bush’s reputation on the far right.

The hypocrisy of the U.S. immigration system is once again evident. Our unfair trade policies force migrants to leave their home countries behind. Instead of supporting exploited workers’ rights, our government deports them, splitting up families and terrorizing communities.

We demand a just immigration reform that respects immigrant and worker rights. We demand an end to raids and an end to NAFTA-style “free” trade deals that drive worker exploitation on both sides of the border.
