Cuba Caravan Visits Portland and Screening of Film Salud!

When: Friday June 20 6-9pm
Where: Liberty Hall (311 N. Ivy St.)

On Friday June 20th the Portland Central America Solidarity Committee is hosting a screening of ¡Salud!, a documentary about ELAM in Havana, the largest medical school in the world.  There, thousands of students receive a free medical education in exchange for pledging to return to poor communities when they graduate, many times replacing the Cuban volunteer doctors who had been working in their area. The ELAM's aim is to build a
sustainable international health care system by training students, with the aid of scholarships, to serve in underserved areas.

We are showing this film in conjunction with a visit by Pastor's for Peace Cuba Caravan during their brief stop in Portland.  Pastor's for Peace/IFCO has been sending shipments of medical supplies, as well as basic amenities to Cuba for sixteen years despite the US trade embargo.

Some of the "caravanistas" will be speaking about their experiences traveling throughout the country.  We are taking this opportunity to educate our community not only about the Cuban health care system but our own community's efforts to reform our own health care system here in the United States.

6-6:30 pm       Cuban Dinner
6:30-7:15pm   Cuba Caravan Speaker and community presentations
7:15-7:30pm   David Rovics
7:45 pm         ¡Salud! Screening
