Most Oregon Reps Oppose OFTA

by Ben O'Donnell last modified Thursday, July 27, 2006 03:00 PM

After Wyden "No" Vote and Hundreds of Postcards and Phone Calls, All Oregon Representatives Except for Walden Pledge to Oppose US-Oman Free Trade Agreement

All but one member of Oregon's Congressional Delegation oppose the US-Oman
Free Trade Agreement as it is currently written.  Rep. Hooley was the first to
express her opposition, citing the agreement's failure to set adequate labor standards
for Oman.  Rep. Blumenauer opposes the deal for the White House's refusal to seek
bi-partisan support by prohibiting goods made by forced labor.  Rep. Defazio is a
long-time critic of NAFTA-style trade deals and Rep. Wu's office indicated that the
agreement fails to enforce adequate human rights for workers in Oman.

Rep. Greg Walden has not taken a position on the agreement, though may
anticipate he will support it.  Walden was the only Oregon Representative to vote last
year for CAFTA, a trade deal that expanded NAFTA to six countries in Central America.

Call your Senator Wyden and your representative now and thank them for
supporting fair and honest trade!

Thank Representatives Blumenauer, Hooley, Wu and DeFazio for their stand
on trade justice:

  • Rep. Earl Blumenauer: (202) 225-4811/(503)231-2300
  • Rep. Darlene Hooley: (202) 225-5711/(503)557-1324
  • Rep. David Wu (800) 422-4003

Call Rep. Walden and demand that he join the rest of the Oregon delegation
in opposing the Oman Free Trade Agreement:

  • Rep. Greg Walden (800) 533-3303
