"An Evening of Afro-Caribbean Film, Music and Food from Bluefields, Nicaragua: Reggae Capital of Central America."
Featuring live music sets from Rhythm Culture and Nuborn Tribe, an hour of exclusive film footage of Bluefields top musical stars, and Nicaraguan food and drinks.
$5 entry, all ages. New Born Tribe is located on NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd at Fremont Street.
This event is a fund-raiser to build a recording studio and cultural center in Bluefields, Nicaragua - a town rich with culture and musical talent that has been hard hit by wars, hurricanes, drugs, and poverty. A centuries-old pirate hideout, Bluefields is the biggest town on Nicaragua's remote Caribbean coast, and is a melting pot of Afro-Caribbean, indigenous, Latin, and English cultures. The legacy of colonialism, U.S. invasions, natural disasters, and the Reagan's Sandinista-Contra war have left Bluefields in ruins, but the strength of its uniquely eclectic culture perseveres through the music of artists young and old, such as Kali Boom and Old Sabu. The event will feature an exclusive screening of new and vintage films of Bluefields' top musical stars, including Philip Montalban, Dimension Costena, and Caribbean Taste.
Sponsors of the event include: Bluefields Sound System, Portland Central America Solidarity Committee (www.pcasc.net), Bmedia, KBOO 90.7 FM, and New Born Tribe.
